Greer Wins Lakeland Stages!

(Photo: DGM Sport – Facebook) Jonny Greer and Gordon Noble secured a sensational victory at the BJT Commercials & Plant Hire Lakeland Stages Rally, round eight of the Carryduff Forklift MSA Northern Ireland Stage Rally Championship!

While Vincent McAree nabbed an early advantage after stage one before Martin Cairns moved in front after stage two, Greer found himself languishing 13 seconds behind the rally leaders after the second test. But he pulled out all of the stops on the long 14.44 mile third test to propel himself to the top of the order.

At the end of that third stage, he found himself sharing the rally lead with Garry Jennings and Barry McNulty, and that marked the beginning of a titanic battle between the two crews. They were equal fastest through the fourth test and continued to share the rally lead until Jennings went two seconds quicker on the penultimate fifth stage.

It was all down to the final test, and with another 14.44 mile run through the Carrigans test, Greer was determined to dominate once again. He had set the pace by an impressive nine seconds from Mark Donnelly on the first run through the stage earlier in the day, and knew he had to perform a similar feat to secure his maiden Carryduff Forklift N.I. series success.

Garry Jennings was in equally determined form but his rally was to end in a Lakeland Stages ditch on this occasion. Pushing hard, he slipped off the road and out of the rally.

That allowed Greer, who is son of championship sponsor David Greer, to secure a popular win aboard his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9. Fastest by an impressive 12 seconds on this occasion, his winning margin was 24 seconds from Mark Donnelly and Sean Ferris, while Martin Cairns and Kevin Flanagan claimed third.

In the battle among the championship contenders, Derek McGeehan and Damien Connolly pipped series leaders Derek McGarrity and James McKee to the post on this occasion. Just three seconds separated the two crews, with McGeehan claiming fourth ahead of McGarrity in fifth. The result ensures that the tussle for Championship spoils will go down to the final round.
