The Sun (N.I) Motoring Editor Darren Liggett enjoyed his first experience of navigating in a high-powered rally car on a closed road event on Saturday.

Thanks to Newry & District Motor Club and top 2WD pilot Mickey Conlon, Darren jumped into Mickey’s Mark 2 Escort hot seat for the final loop of three stages of last weekend’s Modern Tyre Service Mourne Rally, round five of the Carryduff Forklift MSA N.I. Rally Championship.

Darren was invited to sample the action by the local MSA GoMotorsport rep, Jonathan MacDonald. In an effort to raise awareness of the sport across the country, more journalists will be invited to take part in other events across the country in the coming months as part of the GoMotorsport scheme.

“I’d never read pace notes before so it was a baptism of fire,” Darren said afterwards. “Unfortunately the car developed a misfire but that’s probably just as well as it meant we had to go a little bit slower. It was fast enough for me and we had plenty of sideways action…it was great fun!”

Keep an eye out for a report on Darren’s rally experience in this Friday’s Sun. You can also follow Darren on Facebook at and for more information on how to get involved in the sport, log on to
